It’s built around the idea of setting down military camps (which have to actually move across the map to reach their destination, unlike the other buildings in the game). I’m probably an outlier, but I actually found the land-based military stuff pretty unique and interesting. I know tastes and expectations vary for campaigns in sandbox games, but I thought it provided a pretty decent tutorial, the characters (basic cartoon archetypes) were enough to move the ‘plot’ along, you often start with enough pre-built elements so you’re not replaying the initial town setup every time, and I especially enjoyed some of the combat elements in the campaign. The campaign for Anno 1404 / Dawn of Discovery is actually pretty great. I’m sure this has been mentioned upthread somewhere, but for any newcomers:
